Kids get a special treat today at the Echo Park Farmers’ Market for Easter!

Hide the carrots because the Easter Bunny will be entertaining kids starting at 4:30 pm. Younger kids get a head start on the egg hunt at 5:00 pm, while the older kids get to start at 5:30 pm.

The craft table will also feature bunny ear making with Cindy!

And, as always, make sure to stock up on plenty of tasty veggies from our local farmers. See you there!

Retouching the mural. Twitter photo via @andresjcruz

Andres Cruz on Twitter sent us the above photo yesterday, showing the progress made on the Quinceañera mural on the former Pescado Mojado building. The mural, painted in 1996, was being sanded off for the new Señor Fish restaurant when the neighborhood protested. Work stopped immediately, and the new restaurant owners hired an artist who had worked on the mural before to begin the retouching immediately.

If we could make a cake for Origami, this is what it'd look like. (Flickr photo via Sugar&Lace)

Origami Vinyl is turning three!

The record store/music venue is celebrating at tonight’s weekly Record Club across the street at El Prado. Bring some cupcakes and some 45’s to spin on the record player any time from 9:00 pm – 12:00 midnight. Perhaps you’ll make some vinyl record themed cupcakes for the occasion?

if you can’t make it tonight, mark your calendars for Record Store Day – a nation-wide event celebrating, you guessed it, record stores – on Saturday, April 21. Origami plans on throwing a grand fiesta with eight bands at The Echo, DJs at Origami Vinyl, giveaways, and we’re sure much much more.

Read more about Origami Vinyl on just-published interview on LAist.

The last time we wrote about things hanging from power lines, it was the red glittery shoes (that are still there, btw) put up by artist Manny Castro to advertise his show at Echo Park gallery iam8bit. Now joining the sun-soaked glitter shoes are stuffed teddy bears hanging from power lines all over Los Angeles, including Echo Park, West Hollywood, Silver Lake, and Los Feliz so far. We’ve heard the rumors, but the Franklin Avenue blog also asks the question we are asking – what’s up with all the hanging teddy bears?

It’s probably not some Build-A-Bear ad campaign, but we’re thinking something more like a some hipster art project and less like the Care Bears are going to sell you some drugs. Let us know if you’ve got the details.

In partnership with PEN, Poets & Writers, and the Ayrshire Foundation, 826LA has published Literary Los Angeles: A Road Guide – a visual guide to the literary hotspots in Los Angeles.

They’ll celebrate tonight at 826LA / The Time Travel Mart in Echo Park, and along with libations will feature readings from contributors Wanda Coleman, Nina Revoyr, Luis J. Rodriguez, and David Ulin, and moderated by Tom Lutz.

Tonight’s event is just $12, includes a map, and benefits 826LA. Click here for ticket, or buy them at the door for $15.

You can also order the 24″ x 18″ posters or fold-out online (or purchase at The Time Travel Mart in person) for $10.

Doors open at 7:00 pm, the event starts at 7:30 pm.

The Time Travel Mart is located at 1714 West Sunset Boulevard

A Chango mural concept

One of the iconic symbols of Echo Park, and one that residents take a lot of pride in, are the colorful murals that decorate our streets. The Sunset Boulevard and Echo Park Avenue mural is one of the most iconic, but look around a little more and you’ll start to notice a myriad of new and old designs that give this neighborhood a colorful background.

Cock-fight mural. Flickr photo via Michael Taft

You may have noticed some changes happening at Chango, which is undergoing minor renovations under new ownership (Jenna Turner, who owns a Susina Bakery on Beverly Boulevard, and Fix Coffee owner Marc Gallucci). But the new owners weren’t prepared for the community’s reaction when they white-washed the property’s cock-fight themed mural. We’re glad they arrived at last night’s Echo Park Improvement Association’s Neighborhood Issues Committee meeting to address any concerns, and assure everyone that they didn’t mean to offend anyone by painting over the mural.

That corner has been through a couple of murals the past decade or so – first there was the more infamous painting of chickens by artist Aaron Donovan, a piece painted because of the corner’s “Chicken Corner” nickname. The original mural was removed when Chango put in windows at that wall. Then a few years ago, the cock-fighting themed mural took its place.

Jenna assured committee members last night that they did, indeed, get permission from the original muralist Richard Meinhardt via the new artist, by the name of Axis,  to remove the piece. Pictured above is a new concept (not the final, final one yet) the new owners designed for the new mural, but at the EPIA meeting said that they were open to including a chicken in there somewhere.

One mural that was saved, probably due to public outcry from coverage on news websites like The Eastsider LA, was the Logan Street mural decorating the former Pescado Mejodo restaurant. Senior Fish has been renovating the corner restaurant for quite some time now, but surprised residents when workers started sandblasting the mural.

Jesse Pimentel represented Senior Fish at the EPIA meeting, saying “We certainly didn’t intend to offend anyone.” Today they will have a retoucher, who has worked on the mural, bring back the mural to its state before the sandblasting began.

The lesson here is that Echo Park loves its murals, and there are many community resources like the EPIA if there are questions about the neighborhood murals. We have to give kudos to the recently opened Red Hill, which kept a colorful mural on the Montana side of its building even after a complete renovation.

As for Senior Fish opening, they are expecting a (hopefully successful) visit from the health department next week, and may open as early as one month from now. Chango is re-opening on Saturday, and will keep the same staff along with the menu.

Capping an era of L.A. oil exploration – LA Times
This week the city started plugging an old oil well just south of Glendale Boulevard and Rockwood Street to make way for a 45-unit apartment complex. Just up the street, where the Echo Park Pool is now, was the first oil well in Los Angeles.

Robert DeLong’s electronic dance music residency, Monday nights at Los Globos – Examiner.com
If only we didn’t have to work on the weekdays! The Examiner.com gives out rave reviews for Echo Park resident Robert DeLong’s Monday night residency at Los Globos: “He is salvaging what is left of everything great about electronic music and creating something fresh and so immediately appealing that you can’t help but start moving to the music as soon as he starts playing.”

Planning board supports Elysian Heights coffee house plan to serve wine and beer – The Eastsider LA
Fix Coffee in Elysian Heights is one step closer to serving beer and wine after an appeal failed to convince the planning board to block the application. The coffee shop will still need to obtain a state beer and wine license from ABC.

Driving along Glendale Boulevard just got a lot more colorful!

LAist got the story on who’s behind the new colorful mural on the wall of Alfredo Market on Glendale Boulevard, between Alvarado and Berkeley. Street artist and Echo Park resident Kophns One (aka Koffinz) painted the mural at the end of December. According to The Site Unseen website, “Kophns is well-known within the LA street scene for his distinct and bold artistic style, dynamic characters and his always engaging art placement.” Hopefully a city-wide mural ordinance being debated won’t interfere with local art like this!

The Site Unseen uploaded this video of the mural process. Enjoy!

Did you know…. In Portland you can go to a record store and sell your CDs?

That’s right – we’re talkin’ Portlandia. They’re coming to Echo Park on January 17, 2012 and well, let’s face it – you could re-name the show EchoParklandia and it’d basically be the same show. I have to say, I’m a fan!

The event at The Echo is one of six city tours (dubbed Portlandia: The Tour), and features co-creators Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein. They’ll be performing live music, talking about the show, and playing clips from the show’s second season, which premieres on January 6, 2012. Here’s a little sneak peak of what you can expect (from the show’s website):

Tickets are $20.00 advance BUT here’s the deal – it looks like it’s already sold out. You might be able to get the $26.00 tix on the day of the show, if there are any available.
