Echo Park United Against Hate Crimes organizing town hall

The stabbing of two long-time Echo Park residents on May 24 have sparked not just community-wide concern over safety, but also condemnation after the LAPD announced it was considering the crime a hate crime.

On Tuesday, June 26, the Echo Park United Against Hate Crimes have organized a town hall meeting featuring community groups, elected leaders, and LAPD representatives to address the hate crime issue.

The town hall is co-hosted by El Centro Del Pueblo, Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 721, Assemblymember Gilbert Cedillo, Los Angeles Councilmember Eric Garcetti. Captain Murphy of the LAPD Northeast Division will also be providing a special report.

The LAPD are categorizing the incident as a hate crime, and, as the town hall flyer states, “we are calling on the Echo Park community to declare that a hate crime against any one member of our community is a hate crime against the entire community.”

When the victims of the crime are being called “faggot” as knives are being plunged into their bodies, is all the evidence needed for even the biggest dummy to identify this incident as a HATE CRIME. During a neighborhood bbq on Sunday, this barbaric crime was discussed by a whole group of my neighbors. We have unanimously decided to become more watchful, less lazy, and not shy about calling the police to report even the slightest hint of hooliganism, gratuitous harassment, vandalism, or suspicious activity in our neighborhood. We are of every race and sexual orientation and we are on a mission to get criminals who stab people off the street and into prison where they belong.

The last post gets it. If there was every a time to meet and greet your neighbors, exchange phone numbers, FB accts, etc. and come to an agreement as to what constitutes suspicious behavior, what to look out for, etc. this is the time. Let this be the impetus to organize.
