Lot 1 Cafe now serving up late-night music

A lot of changes over the past few months for Lot 1 at the corner of Sunset Blvd. and Laveta Terrace – they’ve added tables outside, beer and wine, and now some live entertainment.

According to the Lot 1 Facebook page, the cafe received its entertainment license last November. It was also granted a beer and wine license last year, and now serves up the neighborhoods best deal for mimosas (only $4). Combine food, booze, and live entertainment, and then add late night hours (open until 1:00 am most weeknights, and 3:00 am on the weekends), the establishment that once had those precarious business hours may draw a crowd to that little corner.

The cafe’s first live show coming up on Friday, January 7 is an indie-themed set of performances by some local bands, such as The Black Jesus from nearby Mt. Washington. We’re not sure what kind of music or if local musicians will be the focus for the location (the owner of Lot 1 declined to comment for now), but with the Echo Curio gone many are wondering if the cafe will help fill that void.

Will you go to a show that promises booze, dancing, and no LAPD busting down the doors?

Click here for event info, and check out Lot 1 Cafe’s page on Echo Park Online.

A “void” left by the Echo Curio that the owner of Lot 1 took malicious glee in helping to perpetrate in the hopes of giving people no other option than to go to Lot I.

I do not believe that anyone who contributed to making Echo Curio great, or appreciated what it gave to the community is really “wondering if Lot 1 will help fill that void.”

Echo Curio ran on abundance, and the community supported w abundance. Lot 1 is run on scarcity, and I believe the community will respond in kind.

And, as if if there was any doubt after reading my commentary here, I will NEVER, EVER attend a show at Lot 1. And I’m not going to be shy about telling my tale to musicians as well as showgoers.

(I feel strongly about this ;-))

i just want to echo the comment left by “boo.” i’ve lived in this neighborhood long enough to watch the mean owner of Lot 1 harass multiple business owners in a silly, misguided attempt to help her own business. she seems to think that if she’s the only attraction on the entire block, it will help. she’s wrong. she’s mean too! no void will be filled by Lot 1, ever.

  3. Sounds Great! says:

Before I get into being excited about Lot 1 Cafe having live bands playing, I want to touch on these other comments that make no sense to my brain.

If Echo Curio cared so very much about the community, why did they not strive to do things properly and legally? Why did they not even attempt to get their beer and wine license or entertainment license? If they cared about providing such a great spot for the Echo Park community (long-term), why did they neglect to play by the rules so that they would not get shut down? Why did they not attempt to go to the LAPD and tell them they were going to work to get their licenses? To me, that tells me that their “caring” for the community was phony.

On the flip side, Lot 1 has done everything by the book, and probably has something to do with why it has taken so long for it to find its identity. Having a spot that serves great food and good booze…and now live bands is awesome for Echo Park. I will definitely be checking out the bands as it sounds like a good time. Forget the haters and if the vibe is cool and the bands are awesome, why not enjoy a great spot? People need to stop hating to hate and just enjoy the fact that Echo Park has gotten another cool spot to chill at.

Echo Curio and Lot 1 both have/had the air of half-assedness about them. I guess we’ll see what happens.

  5. anonymous says:

From my one experience, when I asked for “the best thing you make,” the food at Lot 1 was total crap. An “Italian” omelet (basically a sausage omelet with what seemed like canned marinara sauce (if it wasn’t canned, maybe they should give up the house recipe and buy a few cans)). C- at best

As far as Lot1 v. Echo Curio:

Part of what made the Echo Curio great was that it was what you brought to it. Maybe they didn’t play by the rules, but that’s part of what made it special (and ultimately meant its demise).

From my few experiences meeting them, I seriously doubt that the Lot 1 people will be able to provide such an organic and egalitarian situation as was provided by the Curio, and as a musician, I doubt very seriously I will attend or perform in any show presented there.

Just for the record, Echo Curio did attempt to do things properly and legally. not every business can get licensing to have live music – there are quite a few architectural restrictions in terms of exits, bathroom sizes, zoning, and designated parking which couldn’t be met without major reconstruction and even then the zoning regulation would go to trial where it may not be approved. Genrally if a business qualifies to serve food, it will also meet the minimum requirements to apply for the cabaret license (former restaurant spaces are hence good spaces to look into if you want to open a venue).

  7. braeden says:

I don’t know enough about Lot 1, but I know that the Echo Curio was fantastic. “Playing by the rules” does not equate to caring for the community—that assertion is laughably fallacious. The process of obtaining said permits is next-to-impossible for DIY, egalitarian spaces like the Curio, and the rules are made that way on purpose. The only game the Curio refused to play was the capitalism game, and the powers that be just couldn’t stand for that. I can’t wait for the Curio’s owners’ next project….I’ll be there every week! People will find a way to listen to live music whether they’re given the “right” to or not.
